Henry Schulte is an artist, curator, and a community organizer whose work navigates the intersections of ecology, materiality, and identity in the borderland. As the Rubin Center for the Visual Art’s Assistant Curator of Practice, Schulte has curated various exhibitions, including You’re Meant to Be Here With the Living (2024) and Un Dique: Iterations of Interrupted Space (2025). Schulte’s participation in the exhibition reflects his work as an educator at the Rubin Center, where he mentors student interns working in education and exhibition departments.
In Shy Painting, Schulte revisits one of his earlier encaustic paintings. Re-purposing an earlier work that Schulte exhibited publicly, the work is now recontextualized in a state of withdrawal. The original encaustic painting began with a layer of acrylic paint, to which Schulte then began to apply layers of wax in order to weave in weeds from Northwest El Paso. Now encased within a larger frame with motorized window blinds, the work reacts to its environment. As one approaches the work, the blinds shut close, obscuring the work from view. What was once open to observation now chooses its own concealment.
The concept behind this work emerged from Schulte’s experience showing the original encaustic painting at the Sun Bowl Art Exhibition, where he became acutely aware of how his work was perceived, or more precisely, overlooked. By enclosing the work in a responsive mechanism, Schulte imparts a shyness and self-protective reflex onto the object. Treating the work less as a static image and more as a sentient object, Schulte gives the work a sense of animism. The interaction between viewer and artwork transforms into a subjective shifting encounter, mediated by the transference of visibility and concealment.

En Pintura tímida, Schulte retoma una de sus primeras pinturas encáusticas. Reutilizando una obra que había exhibido públicamente, la pieza ahora se recontextualiza en un estado de retraimiento. La pintura encáustica original comenzó con una capa de pintura acrílica, sobre la cual Schulte aplicó capas de cera para entretejer hierbas recolectadas en el noroeste de El Paso. Ahora, encerrada dentro de un marco mayor con persianas motorizadas, la obra reacciona a su entorno: cuando alguien se acerca, las persianas se cierran, ocultando la pintura a la vista. Lo que alguna vez estuvo abierto a la observación ahora elige su propio ocultamiento.
El concepto detrás de esta obra surgió de la experiencia de Schulte al presentar la pintura original en la Sun Bowl Art Exhibition, donde se hizo dolorosamente consciente de cómo se percibía su trabajo, o más precisamente, de cómo era pasado por alto.
